Perfume

"Human odour was of no importance to him whatever. He could imitate human odour quite well enough with surrogates. What he coveted was the odour of certain human beings: that is, those rare human who inspire love. Those were his victims."

"He possessed the power. He held it in his hand. A power stronger than the power of money or the power of terror or the power of death: the invicible power to command the love of mankind. There was only one thing that power could not do: it could not make him able to smell himself. And though his perfume might allow him to appear before the world has a god - if he could not smell himself and thus never kow who he was, to hell with it, with the world, with himself, with his perfume."

perdão

« (...) the explosion had happened - but no one had died. It was just walking wounded as far as the eye could see. No packed bags, no final door slams, no relocation to different colleges,  different towns. They were all going to stay put and suffer. It would be played out very slowly over years. The thought was debilitating. Everybody knew about it. Howard expected that the shorthand, water-cooler version, currently circulating the college would be 'Warren's forgiven her' said with pity mixed with a little contempt - as if that covered it, the feeling. People said 'She's forgiven him' about Kiki, and only now was Howard learning of the levels of purgatory forgiveness involves. »

the end of the affair

"People were continually coming in, and I wouldn't be one of those who by moving their heads up and down betray a foolish expectation. What have we all got to expect that we allow ourselves to be so lined with disappointment?"

"- (...) I want you to be happy, that's all.
- You'd make my bed for me?
- Perhaps.
Insecurity is the worst sense that lovers feel: sometimes the most humdrum desireless marriage seems better. Insecutiry twists meanings and poisons trust."

leitura levezinha, mas agradável.

body vs mind

« '(...) Men move with their minds, and women must move with their bodies, whether we like it or not. That's how God intended it - I have always felt that so strongly. When you're a larger lady, though, I expect that becomes a little more hard.'
'No, I'm cool, I'm fine - there,' said Kiki, good-humouredly, upright now, and shimmying her hips a little. 'Actually, I'm pretty flexible. Yoga. And, to be honest, I guess I feel men and women use their minds about equally.' She brushed the  wood dust off her palms.
' Oh, I don't. No, I don't. Everything I do I do with my body. Even my soul is made up of raw meat, flesh. Truth is in a face, as much as it is anywhere. We women know that faces are full of meaning, I think. Men have the gift of pretending that's not true. And this is where their power comes from. (...)' »

The End - To The Lighthouse

To the Lighthouse

To the lighthouse (III)

10 years later, it is time to go to the place that might have been visited 10 years ago. Time passes. And, perhaps, the expedition came too late.

quotations:

he had made them come. he had forced them to come (...) since he had forced them to come against their wills.

Mrs Ramsay saying 'Life stand still here';

Mrs Ramsay making of the moment something permanent;

(...)

in the midst of chaos there was shape.

There was this expedition - they were going to the lighthouse, Mr Ramsay, Cam and James.

Yes, it must have been precisely here that she stood ten years ago. There was the wall; the hedge; the tree.

He had all the appearence of a leader making ready for an expedition (...) but with a pallor in their eyes which made her feel that they suffered something beyond their years in silence.

all was silence.

nobody seemed to have spoken for an age. Cam was tired of looking at the sea. Little bits of black cork had floated past; the fish were dead in the bottom of the boat. Still her father read, and James looked at him and she looked at him, and they vowed that they would fight tyranny to the death, and he went on reading quite unconscious of what they thought.

all was silence.

Milenarmente a grande estrela iluminou a terra e, afinal, nós pouco aprendemos a ver.

Time Passes (II)

while reading, one feels that several things are taking place. but the truth is that everything which is silently said (and thought) is referring to a single moment - Mrs Ramsay and her beloved son James by her side. it is her motherhood and her care that is contemplated by those who are living in her house.and the singularity of that moment would end. suddenly. silently.

quotations:

[Mr. Ramsay stumbling along a passage stretched his arms out one dark morning, but, Mrs Ramsay, having died rather suddenly the night before, he stretched his arms out. They remained empty]

Mrs Ramsay's things. Poor lady! She would never want them again. She was dead, they said; years ago, in London.

The house was left; the house was deserted. It was left like a shell on a sandhill to fill with dry salt grains now that life had left it. (...) keys were turned all over the house; the front door was banged; it was finished.

much should have been said but was kept in silence. Mrs Ramsay was dead.

well, we must wait for the future to show.

The Window (I)

She had done the usual trick - been nice. She would never know him. He would never know her. Human relations were all like that, she thought, and the worst were between men and women. Inevitably they were extremely insincere.     page 101

(...) for she guessed what he was thinking - he would have written better books if he had not married. He was not complaining, he said. She knew that he had nothing whatever to complain of. (...) and he seized her hand and raised it to his lips and kissed it with an intensity that brought the tears to her eyes, and quickly he dropped it.     page 77

for now, she need not think about anybody. She could be herself, by herself. And that was what now she often felt the need of - to think. well, not even to think. To be silent; to be alone.         page 69

a window. a house. an ordinary family. the daily and detailed life of the people that lived there and of the ones who were looking through the window.

their most deep thoughts and responses. the sweet will of James little heart. he wants to go to the lighthouse. according to his mother's will and love, this should not be denied to a child. if one (his father) refuses it, he will never forget about that non accomplished desire.

the silent and invisible tears of a marriage that is no longer as such. made of empty words. made of empty gestures. sometimes, even made of darkness.
