If writing novels is like planting a forest, then writing short stories is more like planting a garden."

para aguçar o gosto:

"No matter what they wish for, no matter how far they go, people can never be anything but themselves. That's all."

" 'But you had better think about it very carefully, my lovely young fairy, because I can grant you only one.' In the darkness somewhere, an old man wearing a withered-leaf-coloured tie raises a finger. 'Just one. You can't change your mind afterwards and take it back.' "

"'Clothes aren't important. The real problem is what's inside them.' "

" '...there are ways of dying that don't end in funerals. Types of death you can't smell.' "

" ' They tell us that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, but O don't believe that, ' he said. Then, a moment later, he added: 'Oh, the fear is there, alright. It comes to us in many different forms, at different times, and overwhelms us. But the most frightening thing we can do at such times is to turn our backs on it, to close our eyes. For then we take the most precious thing inside us and surrender it to something else. In my case, that something was the wave.' "
